Lineup of Sunday liquid fertilizers, pest control, and grass seed products on a green lawn.

How to Apply Sunday Products in Order

Got a box full of Sunday products and not sure where to start? Here's how to apply fertilizer, weed control, seed, and pest products in the right order and timing.

You opened your Sunday box. There's fertilizer, weed control, maybe some seed. This guide covers what to apply first, how long to wait between products, and what happens if you miss a window.

Most of this is handled automatically in your My Plan Dashboard, but if you have questions, keep reading.

What order should I apply Sunday products? (and care for my lawn)

Here's the sequence that works best:

Sunday's graphic for order of applications for yard care products.

Before you apply

Mow first. Always mow 1 to 2 days before applying any product. Set your mower to 3 to 4 inches for cool-season grass, 2 to 3 inches for warm-season.

Water if needed. If your lawn is dry, water lightly 2 to 3 hours before applying. Apply all products to dry grass.

The application sequence

  1. Fertilize your lawn. Feed first to build strong grass. Apply when temps are 50 to 85°F for cool-season, 65 to 90°F for warm-season.
  2. Control weeds. Wait 24 to 48 hours after fertilizer. Dandelion Doom works best between 50 to 85°F. Weed Warrior works below 95°F.
  3. Patch and seed. Wait 1 day after Weed & Green or Dandelion Doom. Wait 5 days after Weed Warrior. Seed when temps are 55 to 75°F for cool-season, 70 to 90°F for warm-season.
  4. Control pests. Apply to dry lawn, 24 hours after any liquid product. Works any temp as long as insects are active.
  5. Fertilize garden. Feed your garden beds throughout the season.

You may not need all five products. Your plan is customized based on your location, grass type, and yard conditions. But when you do have multiple products, this is the order.

After you apply

Water appropriately. Wait 24 hours after fertilizer, then water deeply. Don't water for at least 24 hours after weed control. For new seed, water lightly 1 to 2 times daily until germination. Don't water pest treatment areas until you see no activity.

Wait to mow. Give products 24 to 48 hours to absorb before mowing again.

Watch the forecast. Light rain within 24 hours of fertilizing is fine. For weed control, rain within 6 hours can reduce effectiveness. Pick a dry day.

The universal rule: Apply to dry grass, give each product time to absorb, and water and mow at least 24 hours later. The exception is new seed, which needs immediate moisture daily.

How do I know when to apply each product?

If you're a Sunday subscriber, your My Plan Dashboard shows date ranges for each product based on your location and grass type. We track weather, soil temps, and growing conditions so you don't have to.

Not a subscriber? Here's a general timeline:

Early spring: Pre-emergent weed control (as soil hits 55°F). Watch for forsythia blooming to time this right.

Mid-to-late spring: First fertilizer application, post-emergent weed control.

Late spring: Overseeding cool-season lawns, patching bare spots, second fertilizer application.

Summer: Pest control, fertilizer if needed, water management, overseeding warm-season lawns.

Early fall: Overseeding cool-season lawns, fall fertilizer, post-emergent weed control.

Late fall: Final fertilizer, winterize lawn.

Sunday Tip: Our guides on best time to apply lawn fertilizer and preventing spring weeds cover timing in more detail.

What Sunday products can I apply on the same day?

A few combinations work well together:

Fertilizer + seed: Yes. Seed once the fertilizer is dry, or seed first and fertilize right after. Either works.

Pet Patch + dog-resistant seed: Yes. Treat the spot and water in, wait until completely dry, then clear dead grass and seed.

Pest spray + pest bait: Yes. Apply spray first, let it dry, then add bait products.

Lawn products + garden fertilizer: Yes. Different areas, no conflict.

Sunday Tip:

It IS possible to apply Sunday products across a single weekend. It just takes a little bit of planning. Here’s our inside scoop on how to apply your Sunday box in one weekend.

Do I mow before or after applying lawn products?

Both. Mow 1 to 2 days before applying any product, then wait 24 to 48 hours after applying before mowing again. This gives products time to absorb without getting cut off or scattered.

Set your mower to 3 to 4 inches for cool-season grasses, 2 to 3 inches for warm-season. Check the mowing height chart for your grass type.

When should I water after applying lawn products?

Fertilizer: Wait 24 hours, then water deeply to help nutrients reach the roots.

Weed control: Don't water for at least 24 hours. The product needs to dry on the weed leaves to work.

Seed: Water lightly 1 to 2 times daily to keep soil moist until germination. Then shift to deeper, less frequent watering.

Pest control: Most treatments aren’t applied directly to the lawn, except for ant baits. Don't water the treatment area until baits have been carried back to the colony and you see no activity.

What about applying lawn products before rain?

Light rain within 24 hours of fertilizing is fine. For weed control, rain within 6 hours can reduce effectiveness. Check the forecast and pick a dry day.

Can I apply lawn products to wet grass?

Ideally, no. Apply to dry grass for best absorption. Morning application after dew has dried works well.

What temperature is too hot or cold to apply?

Each product has an ideal range:

Fertilizer: 50 to 85°F for cool-season grass, 65 to 90°F for warm-season.

Weed control: 50 to 85°F for Dandelion Doom. Below 95°F for Weed Warrior.

Grass seed: 55 to 75°F for cool-season, 70 to 90°F for warm-season.

Pest control: Any temp as long as insects are active. Dry conditions are more important than temperature.

Applying outside these ranges reduces effectiveness. Stressed grass in extreme heat or drought doesn't absorb products well and can be damaged further. If you're outside the window, wait for better conditions.

What if something goes wrong?

Don't panic. Most application order mistakes are easy to fix.

What if I miss an application?

You can still apply fertilizer 1 to 2 weeks outside your application window. Past that point, skip it and contact our team to get caught up.

Weed control timing matters more. If you miss the pre-emergent window, switch to post-emergent treatment once weeds appear.

Missed the seeding window? Cool-season grass does best in spring and fall. Warm-season grass does best in late spring and summer. If you miss the window, wait for the next one.

Our spring seeding guide has more on timing.

What if I apply products in the wrong order?

It's usually fine. The order matters for optimization, not survival.

Seeded before treating weeds? Hand-pull weeds around new seedlings rather than spraying herbicide.

Applied weed control before fertilizer? Wait 24 hours and then fertilize as normal.

Applied pest control to a wet lawn? Wait for it to dry and reapply if needed.

The main thing to avoid: Applying pre-emergent herbicide right before seeding. That will prevent your grass seed from germinating.
